The government of New South Wales (NSW) has allocated US$10.25bn for investment in public transport, congestion reduction and job creation.

The spending is part of a $20.5bn budget that will be spent over the next four years.

The funding will be split between several projects:

$4.2bn for the Western Harbour Tunnel programme, including work on the Western Harbour Tunnel and Warringah Freeway Upgrade

$3.1bn over four years for Sydney Gateway project construction, and preconstruction on the M6 Stage 1 Extension

$3bn to increase train services

$1.2bn for bus services throughout NSW

$1bn for construction of the WestConnex Motorway. This included the delivery of the final stage of the project, the M4-M5 link tunnels and Rozelle Interchange

$520m for cycling and walking infrastructure

An additional $140m to add to the $648m already allocated for accessibility upgrades to train stations and ferry wharves.

Andrew Constance, NSW’s transport and roads minister, said: “Game changing projects such as Sydney Metro, Parramatta Light Rail and WestConnex are creating jobs and delivering economic benefits to local communities.  

“By 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro stations and a 66km standalone metro railway system, revolutionising the way our city travels.”
