Amea Power wins two battery energy storage contracts

UAE-based renewable energy developer Amea Power has won contracts to develop two battery energy storage systems (bess) in South Africa.
The Gainfar and Boitekong bess projects, located in the North West Province, will each have a capacity of over 300 megawatt-hours.
“These projects will play a vital role in strengthening Eskom’s grid stability,” Amea Power said, referring to the South African public utility company.
“As South Africa continues to grapple with frequent blackouts and load shedding, these bess projects will help mitigate risks and contribute to the country’s energy security.”
The firm added that the Gainfar project will be connected to the Ngwedi substation, while the Boitekong project will be connected to the Marang substation.
The facilities aim to deliver energy and ancillary services to Eskom through a 15-year power-purchase agreement (PPA).
The projects are expected to help strengthen the country’s electricity grid and support the transition to a “more resilient and sustainable energy system”.
South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy organised the public tendering process.
Amea Power’s South Africa portfolio includes the 120MW Doornhoek solar photovoltaic project. It signed the PPA for this project in April last year and achieved financial close two months later.
Amea Power is one of the companies prequalified to bid as part of a consortium for the 800MWh bess project in Abu Dhabi.
