Jordan partners with CTGAAL for Green Hydrogen Production
7 September 2024On September 3, 2024, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, represented by Minister Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, signed an (MoU) with China Three Gorges Asia Africa Limited (CTGAAL) represented by Regional Manger MENA Region Dr. Mohammad & United Energy Group. This MoU sets the stage for detailed feasibility studies to explore the development of 1GW of green hydrogen projects in Jordan.
The MOU signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, attended by Yacoub Elias Marar, Director of the Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Department at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Guan Chunxi, Director of Project Development at United Energy Group Limited, and Mustafa Umar, General Manager of Strategy and Investment at CTGAAL.
Minister Al-Kharabsheh stated "Today, we renew our partnership with the private sector by signing the agreement in the field of green hydrogen to expand investment opportunities in this area," expressing hope that the ministry's vision and ambitions to make Jordan a regional and global hub for green hydrogen production and export will be realized through the signed MoUs in the field.
Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that after the company completes the initial studies and considering the results, the Ministry will continue to work with it towards reaching a final investment agreement for the project.
CTGAAL’s involvement in this project is backed by its extensive experience in renewable energy projects, managing 16 power plants across Pakistan, Egypt, and Jordan, with a total capacity of 1390 MW. This partnership not only strengthens Jordan’s energy sector but also aligns with the country's Economic Modernization Vision (2023-2033), emphasizing the transition towards clean energy.
CTGAAL role in Jordan is vital, as it undertakes a total of seven projects, expanding generation capacity through various sources; solar and wind, thus driving economic growth. CTGAAL generates 193 MW through renewable resources like wind and solar power in the Jordan region. This marks shift towards sustainable energy within the Jordanian electrical energy landscape, especially considering the remarkable increase from 1 percent to 29 percent in the renewable energy total energy mix between 2013 and 2023.
This MoU is a promising step towards a sustainable future, bringing economic growth, environmental benefits, and positioning Jordan at the forefront of the global green hydrogen movement.
