Firmus has signed a multi-year capacity agreement with AI lab OpenAI in Malaysia.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will contract capacity from two Firmus AI data center locations in the country, with OpenAI serving as the anchor customer. Meanwhile, OpenAI's efforts to establish a Stargate site in South Korea are reportedly struggling to get off the ground.

According to Firmus, the agreement with OpenAI brings its total contracted capacity across all customers to more than 900MW. The company currently has seven AI data centers across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, either under development or in operation.

Five remain under development and are expected to be ready for service within 24 months. They will use the Nvidia DSX AI Factory Platform to integrate Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 systems into Firmus' "HyperCube" prefabricated modular solution.

Plans for Firmus to establish a site in Malaysia had not been previously shared.

“This multi-year partnership marks the moment Asia-Pacific becomes a producer of intelligence, not just a consumer of it,” said Tim Rosenfield, Firmus' co-founder and co-CEO.

"Firmus has spent seven years building for this - a footprint that runs from Southeast Asia to Australia, and the manufacturing, technology, and teams to bring it online at speed.” Sachin Katti, VP of Compute Strategy at OpenAI, added: “We’re excited to work with Firmus as we expand our global compute capacity. These new data centers in Malaysia will help us serve growing demand for OpenAI’s products across the region and around the world. We look forward to bringing this capacity online together."

While OpenAI is set to add capacity in Malaysia, elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region the AI lab is struggling to get projects off the ground. As reported by Korea JoongAng Daily , little progress has been made on OpenAI's Stargate project in South Korea. Plans for the project were first announced in October 2025 , with OpenAI signing a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix for the project, which would see two AI data centers established in the southwest region of South Korea.

According to unnamed sources, the publication reports that the project has been stalled as the companies are struggling to acquire a site that can accommodate the power and water needs of the data centers. SK Telecom, meanwhile, said that no further progress has been made following the signing of LOIs. OpenAI declined to comment on the matter, saying only that the domestic project is "still under discussion."
