Ghana Planning 50MW Floating Solar Project
10 May 2024
Ghana’s Volta River Authority is planning to develop a 50MW floating solar project at the Kpong reservoir, near Akuse in the east of the country.
Consultants have been invited to submit expressions of interest to provide project management services for the scheme by 7 June.
The plant will have an estimated generation capacity of 30MW in the first phase, which will be expanded to 50MW in the second phase.
German bilateral cooperation funds have been earmarked for the first phase of the scheme, while private investors will fund the second phase. The project is being implemented by the German Development Bank (KfW).
The services required from the consultant include project management, tender support and construction supervision, as well as developing financial models to stimulate private sector involvement.
Kpong is the second-largest hydroelectric dam in Ghana. Built on the Volta River, the power plant has a capacity of 160MW and was inaugurated in 1982. It provides about 30% of Ghana's electricity.
In June 2023, a 5MW floating solar installation was commissioned on the Bui reservoir in Ghana.
The government is aiming for renewables to contribute 10% of the country’s energy output by 2030.
