Bjarke Ingels Group and HNTB win $1.5bn Las Vegas baseball ground
8 March 2024
Danish architect Bjarke Ingels Group and Kansas-based designer HNTB have won a competition to imagine a baseball stadium for the Athletics baseball team.
The team, commonly known as the As, will be relocating from Oakland, California in spring 2028.
The winning design is a 33,000-seat ballpark occupying a 3.5ha site on Las Vegas Boulevard.
It will take the form of five overlapping shells that are intended to resemble baseball pennants, as well as a cable net glass wall.
John Fisher, the owner of the As, commented that the design was “revolutionary”, and “blended innovation and technology with an enhanced fan experience”.
Fans will approach the $1.5bn stadium through an elevated outdoor plaza connected to bridges over the boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.
This entrance will lead to the main concourse, where a large glass atrium will give views over the city, as well as housing local and international artworks.
From there they will take a seat in either an upper or a lower bowl, an arrangement that is intended to improve sight lines and decrease the distance between the stand and the action.
There will also be a 1,700 sq m “jumbotron” screen and an air conditioning system that cools individual seats.
Further developments are expected to follow the ballpark, such as a hotel and casino.
