Amazon to build two data centres worth $10bn in Mississippi

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to build two data centres near Jackson, Mississippi. Together, the projects will cost $10bn, making them the largest capital investment in the state’s history.

The Mississippi Free Press reported that the state had offered Amazon a $44m incentive package to win the development, which will create 1,000 jobs when operational.

Amazon will also set up educational programmes for local students.

Roger Wehner, AWS’ director of economic development, said: “Since 2011, AWS has invested more than $108bn in its infrastructure across the US to support customers of all kinds, and across all industries, in their digital transformation.”

Tate Reeves, the governor of the state, said: “Mississippi is building a business climate that is ripe for further growth, especially in the technology sector. On top of that, we’re doing what it takes to prepare our workforce to take on these high-paying jobs of the future.”
