Uzbekistan and Hungary Explore Nuclear Collaboration
24 August 2023
Representatives of the governments of Uzbekistan and Hungary have engaged in discussions concerning collaboration in the realm of atomic energy. Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, acknowledged Uzbekistan's potential to construct a new nuclear power plant, showcasing advanced technology. The possibility of investment from a Hungarian company was also highlighted.
Should the Uzbekistan nuclear project progress, joint Russian-Uzbekistan-Hungarian nuclear cooperation, valued at several hundred million euros, will be pursued, utilizing Hungarian dry cooling technology. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has consented to establishing a joint investment fund of $100 million with Uzbekistan's State Investment Fund.
Significant strides have been taken towards establishing a specialized industrial zone near Tashkent, where Hungarian investors can operate under favorable conditions. Completion of this zone is anticipated by year-end. Additionally, an accomplishment of note is the provision for 170 Uzbek students annually to pursue higher education in Hungary through scholarships. Notably, there has been a recent surge in applications, with around 800 individuals expressing interest.
