EUR 242.7 million contract signed for the 1 Mai – Tokyo metro in Romania

Bucharest metro operator Metrorex and the consortium of Alsim Alarko Sanayi Tesisleri and Makyol Insaat Sanayi Turizm signed a RON 1.2 billion (EUR 242.7 million) contract for the construction of the 1 Mai – Tokyo metro section.
The contract was awarded through a restricted tender procedure, in SEAP – the governmental electronic procurement system, on the basis of the award criterion “best value for money”.
The 1 Mai – Tokyo metro section, will be 6.6 km long with 6 stations – Pajura, Expoziției, Piața Montreal, Gara Băneasa, Aeroport Băneasa, Tokyo. It is the first section of the metro Line 6 which will provide metro connection to the Line 4 through the 1 Mai station and will link the central railway station Gara de Nord with the international airport.
The contract is supported by the European funds and the national budget. According to the European Commission, EUR 609 million is the total investment value for the first section of which EUR 517.6 million are covered by the Cohesion Fund through the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (LIOP) 2014-2020. The project also covers the procurement of 12 6-car metro trains travelling 30 minutes from the central station to the airport.
