Amazon to spend $9bn on data centres in Singapore

Amazon’s cloud computing unit will spend US$9bn expanding its data storage capacity in Singapore.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it would help meet growing demand for cloud computing services there over the next five years.

The company invested $8.5bn in Singapore in 2023. The new money will be spent between now and 2028.

One development driving demand is generative AI services.

Among the local customers for these are the government of Singapore and its Port Authority, national library and healthcare system.

According to AWS, the new data centres will support Singapore’s smart nation strategy with “AI Spring for Singapore”.

It describes this as a “multifaceted collaboration with the Singapore Government, public sector organisations, and enterprises to help accelerate the adoption of AI and generative AI in Singapore”.
