Approval given for the A47 widening project in the UK
8 March 2023
Contractor Galliford Try now has approval for its £100 million package of works for the A47 widening project in the UK. The project will see the A47 widened so that it features two lanes in either direction as it bypasses Peterborough to the north of the city.
Construction work is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2023 and the project is due for completion by 2025. This contract forms part of a larger project to widen the A47 along the 184km route between Peterborough and the port of Great Yarmouth. Widening the A47 is expected to cost £500 million and will help carry heavy truck traffic to and from the port, providing an improved connection to the A1(M). Three sections of the A47 are benefiting from upgrades to dual carriageway status and is being managed by National Highways. The project also includes improvements to roundabouts and junctions in a bid to boost traffic flow and reduce congestion, while making the road safer for users and especially with regard to the heavy trucks using the route to access the port.
