13 July 2022
The Government of the Community of Madrid awarded a consortium of ACS, Acciona and Rover a EUR 500 million contract for civil works on the 6.9 km extension of Line 11 part of the future Diagonal metro Line. The works are expected to be completed in 42 months. The line will have five stations two of which will be constructed at Comillas and Madrid Río and three other stations will provide links the lines 1 (at Atocha), 3 (at Palos de la Frontera) and line 6 offering access to the regional and suburban rail transport as well as long-distance and high-speed lines. The metro extension will run from the existing Plaza Elíptica station to the future Conde de Casal interchange to serve the corridor of the A3 motorway providing connection to the south with the east parts of the city. This spring, the EIB announced it will assess the project and is proposing a EUR 372 million funding.
The Diagonal metro Line will be 33.5 km long integrating the planned extensions to Conde de Casal and Valdebebas (the north section). The EUR 1.8 billion project will be implemented into different phases covering the 18.3 km southern section between La Fortuna and Cuatro Vientos, including the two new stations. The central section will be 8 km long linking Conde de Casal with Mar de Cristal providing connections to the Madrid Metro lines 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9. The 7.2 km northern section will connect Mar de Cristal with the new Ciudad de la Justicia station which will serve as an interchange station with Valdebebas suburban train station.
When completed, the line will connect Madrid from the southwest to the northeast, between Cuatro Vientos and Valdebebas, linking seven of Madrid’s transport hubs and strategic transport hubs such as Atocha or the Adolfo Suárez-Barajas international airport. The new metro project is part of the projects which are supported by the national Recovery and Resilience Fund and was approved as a key infrastructure project to develop public transport in Madrid and its metropolitan area to promote a sustainable transport and to offer the Community of Madrid an intermodal and high-capacity public transport services.
