The Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) signed the turnkey contract with Thales in partnership with Orascom Construction and Colas Rail to design, build, commission and maintain the first phase of Cairo Metro Line 4.

Under the contract, Thales will design and build the telecommunications, centralised control and ticketing systems for the metro line. This covers the supply and installation of entire integrated communication and supervision systems including radio, Multi Service Network, wayside telephone and wireless LAN systems, wayside equipment for security systems, passenger information and public address, operations control centre and revenue collection solutions. These robust and reliable technical systems are key to ensure seamless passenger journeys.

Thales has been involved in the development of Greater Cairo Metro network by implementing the first ticketing system for Cairo Line 1, and the communication systems and ticketing solutions for Line 2 and 3.

The first phase of Cairo Metro Line 4 covers the construction of a 19 km long line and 16 stations linking the city’s centre with Gizah pyramids. The line will provide access to the Grand Egyptian Museum located outside of Cairo on the Giza Plateau, near the Pyramids, and is expected to be opened in November 2022.

In November 2021, NAT awarded the consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation and Kinki Sharyo a USD 350 million contract for the supply of 184 metro cars which will operate the first section of the Line 4.

In April 2022, Colas Rail, the leader of the consortium comprising Orascom Construction and Thales was awarded by Mitsubishi a EUR 650 million contract for the construction of the new metro line. The consortium will be responsible for the construction of the rail systems, track and depots.

The first section of the metro line will be constructed within the next 6 years and is part of the 43 km Cairo Metro Line 4 project implemented into two stages. The entire line will be served by 35 stations. The new line is part of the infrastructure plan for the development of public transport envisaged and planned by the government through NAT and will cross the city of Cairo from east to west, from the governorate of Giza to the governorate of Cairo.
