Skanska JV signs deal for $1.5bn US bridge
11 January 2022
The joint venture of Skanska and Traylor Bros has signed a contract worth US$1.56bn (£1.15bn) with NJ Transit. Skanska's share of the contract is worth US$1.09bn.
The contract involves replacing an ageing swing bridge that currently carries the railway over the Hackensack River. Issues with its operation and maintenance are the source of enduring delays for NJ Transit and Amtrak passengers, Its replacement will be a two-track fixed structure that will rise more than 15m over the river, doubling the clearance of the existing bridge. Including the approaches, it will carry about 4km of the Northeast Corridor.
The new Portal North Bridge will be constructed adjacent to the existing structure.
Construction will begin in the second quarter of this year and is scheduled for completion during the third quarter 2027.
