ACCIONA will operate four wastewater treatment plants in Egypt over the next two years for 7 million euros
17 November 2021
ACCIONA will operate and maintain four wastewater plants in different sites in Egypt over the next two years following an agreement signed on 10 October between the company and the Egyptian authorities. The contract is for approximately 7 million euros.
ACCIONA will undertake the rehabilitation of these facilities, located at Abnoub-El Fath (80.000 m3/d), Sodfa-El Ghanayem (30.000 m3/d), El Ayat (30.000 m3/d) and Abu Simbel (6.000 m3/d), all built in 2007. It will also carry out their supply and start-up, as well as the operation and maintenance of the four plants, under the terms of an agreement signed with the National Organization for Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage (NOPWASD).
The treated wastewater will exceed 140,000 m3/day when the four plants are at full capacity. It will be used mainly for agricultural irrigation, increasing the level of water reuse in the country. With these projects, ACCIONA advances in the objectives of its Sustainability Master Plan, in this case, in the efficient use of water from the Nile.
ACCIONA in Egypt
ACCIONA has developed major water treatment projects in Egypt in recent years.
This year it completed the construction of the Bahr Al Baqr Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the biggest in Africa and one of the biggest in the world, with a maximum capacity of 5.6 million cubic metres per day.
Also in the wastewater field, in late 2018 ACCIONA completed the extension of the Gabal El Asfar wastewater treatment plant in Cairo. Its capacity was increased by 500,000 m3/day, raising the total capacity of the project to 2.5 million m3/day.
It has also built the Kattameya wastewater treatment plant (100,000 m3/day).
ACCIONA currently potabilizes water from the River Nile for distribution to the cities of New Cairo and New Capital.
The company has also built five drinking water plants with a capacity of over 600,000 cubic metres per day, providing a service to around 6 million people.
The company is also active in the services sector in Egypt. ACCIONA Cultural Engineering is responsible for the technical development and museographic implementation of 4 areas of the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, with a total surface area of 12,000 square meters.
In the energy sector, ACCIONA Energy has built and operates three photovoltaic plants in alliance with Swicorp's renewable platform. The three plants, located in the Benban complex in the Aswan region, have a total capacity of 186 MWp.
