Recurrent Energy Brings the 200 MWp Villameca Solar Plant into Commercial Operation

16 October 2026

Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ), has announced the start of commercial operations at the Villameca Project, located in Castilla y León, Spain. The photovoltaic (PV) plant has a capacity of 200 MWp, or megawatts-peak. The project is to be hybridized with battery energy storage systems, a segment also moving forward elsewhere in Europe, such as in Brunsbüttel, where Vattenfall awarded Fluence a 1 GWh battery storage project. According to the company, the hybridization would support decarbonization and grid stability.

Annual output estimated at 359,172 MWh

According to Recurrent Energy, the plant is expected to generate approximately 359,172 MWh of electricity annually. The company says this output is enough to power more than 100,000 homes. It would avoid approximately 57,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year, equivalent to removing more than 12,000 internal combustion vehicles from the road.

The group also states that it recently announced the grid connection of Montalto La Viola, one of Italy's first solar-plus-storage hybrid projects. Recurrent Energy presents this as strengthening its expertise in developing hybrid renewable projects across Europe.

Toward about 1 GW of operational solar capacity in Spain

Villameca joins the 426 MWp Rey Solar Project, recently inaugurated in Andalucía, and the 315 MWp Tordesillas Project in Castilla y León, which is expected to be connected later this year. With these three sites, Recurrent Energy's operational solar capacity in Spain is expected to reach approximately 1 GW by the end of 2026.

Dylan Marx, CEO of Recurrent Energy, says that reaching commercial operation at Villameca marks "an important milestone" and strengthens the group's position in Europe. He points to the company's commitment to creating lasting value in the communities where it operates, as well as the level of social and biodiversity commitments achieved during development.

UNEF seal and biodiversity measures

During the permitting and construction phases, the project received the Seal of Excellence from UNEF, the Unión Española Fotovoltaica. The distinction recognizes a plant designed and developed in line with high sustainability standards. Through its Community CaRE program, Recurrent Energy says it supports local development via community facilities, educational improvements and social initiatives.

The project also includes habitat restoration, native vegetation planting and wildlife protection measures, including nesting structures, bat boxes and insect hotels.
