Metlen inaugurates 75MWh BESS in Italy

Greek renewables developer Metlen Energy & Metals and major Italian utility Dolomiti Energia have inaugurated a 25MW/75MWh energy storage project in Erchie, Apulia, Italy.

Announced 25 September, the Erchie battery energy storage system (BESS) is one of the first large-scale BESS facilities to become operational in Italy, as well as the first BESS project connected to the local substation.

Metlen and Dolomiti Energia signed a seven-year physical tolling agreement for the project. Metlen secured capacity market (CM) contracts for Erchie and the 25MW/75MWh San Severo Storage BESS project in 2025, when Italy released the results of its 2026 CM auction.

Erchie was developed and delivered by Metlen. The inauguration ceremony was held on 24 September with representatives of local government and institutional bodies, partners and executives from both companies. During the ceremony, guests toured the BESS facility and were briefed on the project’s operation.

Italy took a major step toward expanding its energy storage capacity on 1 October 2025, when transmission system operator Terna announced the results of the country’s storage-focused capacity auction scheme, the Meccanismo di Approvvigionamento di Capacità di Stoccaggio Elettrico (MACSE), securing 10GWh of energy storage capacity.

Recently, BESS owner-operator BW ESS began construction on its 107MW/515MWh Chignolo Po BESS in Lombardy.

Metlen is active globally, and earlier this month signed an agreement with utility Copec to sell the Tamarico II solar-plus-storage project in Chile’s Atacama region.

PNE and Enercon develop wind and storage project in Germany

Renewables developer Pure New Energy (PNE) and wind turbine manufacturer Enercon are developing a project in Brandenburg, Germany, combining wind generation, BESS, and a dedicated substation.

Announced 23 September, the project will be named the Beerfelde energy park. PNE will construct a wind farm with a 98MW capacity and a BESS with a capacity of 32MW/70MWh.

Enercon will supply both the wind turbines and the BESS. Fourteen of Enercon’s E-175 EP5 E2 wind turbines will be installed.

The companies claimed that this would make the energy park one of the largest projects in Germany to date in which wind energy and BESS have been developed together from the outset.

The companies further stated that interaction of these components creates a system that uses the available grid connection capacity efficiently and provides additional flexibility for the electricity supply.

In May 2025, system integrator Intilion announced it would provide 81MWh of its BESS technology for the Essentho substation in the Sauerland region, North-Rhine Westphalia, in western Germany, for client Umspannwerk Himmelreich GbR.

That project appeared to be related to the Himmelreich substation being built by Enercon for the Himmerleich Wind Park.

Germany is experiencing rapid growth in the development of and construction of large-scale BESS assets.

Mirova invests €65 million in Nordic BESS from Ingrid Capacity

Mirova, affiliate of Natixis Investment Managers, has announced an equity investment of €65 million in two BESS projects developed by Sweden-headquartered BESS developer-operator Ingrid Capacity.

Announced on 22 September, the investment will be used for the first two projects in Mirova’s Nordic Storage Platform (NSP), intended to develop, build and operate utility-scale BESS assets across the Nordic region.

The BESS projects, located in Finland and Sweden will have a combined capacity of 145MW/290MWh.

The Pedersöre project in Finland has a 45MW/90MWh capacity and is ready to build.

The Vaggeryd project in Sweden has a 100MW/200MWh capacity and is located in the SE3 electricity price area. It is expected to reach ready-to-build status in 2027.

The two projects will be developed, operated and optimised by Ingrid Capacity, which will also provide technical and commercial asset management, EPC management and optimisation services, while continuing to develop the Vaggeryd project until it reaches ready-to-build status.

This transaction marks Mirova’s first investment alongside Ingrid Capacity, the company stated that the portfolio benefits from a resilient risk-return profile, including an offtake agreement for the Pedersöre project.

In July, Baltic Storage Platform, a joint venture between three European companies, completed a 100MW/200MWh BESS project in Estonia. It was inaugurated by partners Evecon, Corsica Sole and Mirova.

In March, Ingrid Capacity received construction permits for two projects in Sweden’s SE4 electricity region, including the Vaggeryd project and the 100MW/200MWh Horsaryd project.
