Uganda switches on 24 MW solar project
16 September 2026
A 24 MW solar project belonging to Dubai-based developer Amea Power is now operational in Uganda.
The Ituka solar PV project, located in northwestern Uganda within the country’s West Nile region, is Amea Power’s first operational solar asset in Uganda and the first solar independent power power project in the region. The company began building the project in August 2024.
The site reaches commercial operations following the energisation of the project’s 25 MVA 132/33 kV substation in July, which enables power to be delivered to the offtaker, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited, via the national grid. A power purchase agreement was signed with the utility in September 2023.
According to a statement published by Amea Power, the project will generate almost 54 GWh of energy annually and will power over 192,000 households. Total project costs reached $27 million and were financed by a debt and equity mix from Amea Power and the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund.
The site is implemented by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a project company registered in Uganda and fully owned by Amea Power.
The Ikua solar project is the latest in a series completed by Amea Power across Africa. Within the last year, the company has also switched on a 120 MW project in Tunisia and 120 MW site in South Africa.
The Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA) has identified 456.6 MW of operational solar in Uganda to date, according to figures from its project database, the majority of which is unidentified C&I projects. The country has set a target of reaching 5 GW of solar by 2040.
