Germany welcomes the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm

Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure have brought online Borkum Riffgrund 3, a 913 MW German offshore wind farm backed by power purchase agreements with Amazon, BASF, Covestro, REWE Group and Google.

Danish developer Ørsted and infrastructure manager Nuveen Infrastructure have announced the commercial commissioning of the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm, located off the German coast in the North Sea. With an installed capacity of 913 megawatts (MW), the facility ranks among the largest offshore wind farms currently in operation in Germany. The project, jointly owned by the two groups, strengthens the country's supply of locally produced renewable electricity.

Ørsted's sixth offshore wind farm in Germany

Borkum Riffgrund 3 is the sixth offshore wind farm commissioned by Ørsted in Germany, following Gode Wind 3, a 253 MW project also jointly owned with Nuveen Infrastructure and connected to the grid in early 2025. According to Ørsted, the Danish group now holds approximately 25% of the country's installed offshore wind capacity, making it the leading operator in the sector in Germany. Nuveen Infrastructure, for its part, manages more than $40 billion in infrastructure assets globally.

The commissioning of Borkum Riffgrund 3 marks a further milestone in Ørsted's construction programme, which targets 8.1 gigawatts (GW) of new offshore wind capacity. Once completed, this programme would bring the company's total installed offshore wind capacity to more than 18 GW worldwide. Patrick Harnett, Chief Construction Officer at Ørsted, said the project strengthens energy security across Germany and Europe by powering businesses and homes.

Power purchase agreements with industry and tech

Borkum Riffgrund 3's output is largely secured through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) signed with industrial and technology customers. According to Ørsted, these agreements total 786 MW and involve Amazon (350 MW), BASF (186 MW), Covestro (100 MW), Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group (100 MW) and Google (50 MW). Contract durations range from 10 to 25 years.

Jordi Francesch, Global Head of Asset Management, Clean Energy at Nuveen Infrastructure, said this portfolio of long-term PPAs supports industrial decarbonisation and long-term price visibility for German consumers. Josche Muth, Country Manager for Ørsted Germany, said the country's energy future would be built on domestic renewable power rather than fossil fuel imports.
