Mitsubishi Power, part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has been awarded a contract to provide boiler components for the conversion of heavy oil-fired boilers to dual-fuel operation at the Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants on Saudi Arabia’s west coast.

Each facility comprises four units (Units 1-4), has an installed capacity of approximately 2.9GW and has entered service in stages since 2017.

The company originally supplied the boilers for both plants and will leverage its existing assets to adapt them for dual-fuel operation.

The contract was signed between Dar Al Balad Contracting and Operations (DAB), a local engineering, procurement and construction company, and Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery, acting as Mitsubishi Power’s agent.

The project’s end customer is Saudi Energy (SE).

Mitsubishi Power will work with its local partner DAB to modify the existing boilers for dual-fuel operation on natural gas and heavy oil, and will provide technical support to help ensure reliable, stable performance after the upgrades.

This project is part of the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to increase the share of natural gas in national power generation to more than half of total production.

As part of this policy, power producers including SE have been instructed to adopt natural gas, with conversion efforts being advanced at a national scale.

The transition is especially significant on the west coast of the country, where heavy oil is the dominant fuel and electricity demand is strong.

MHI energy systems steam power business division senior general manager Makoto Fujita said: “The Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants have played a vital role in ensuring a stable electricity supply on Saudi Arabia’s west coast.

“As the OEM [original equipment manufacturer] of the existing boilers, we are very proud to contribute to the country’s energy transition and CO₂ emissions reduction through our participation in this fuel conversion project.

“We will dedicate ourselves to the successful completion of this project and continue to provide support for the long-term stable operation of the plants.”

Mitsubishi Power has indicated it will continue to support the adoption of technologies that help secure stable electricity supplies and advance the goals of economic development and environmental responsibility.

The company emphasises its ongoing role in modernising power generation assets while supporting reductions in CO₂ emissions.

In November 2025, Mitsubishi Power secured a second order for an H-25 gas turbine to be installed at Chang Chun Petrochemical’s Miaoli Factory in north-central Taiwan.
