Gamuda to develop 600MW wind and solar with BESS in Tasmania

Malaysian infrastructure group Gamuda is set to expand its Australian renewables footprint by developing two major energy projects in Tasmania, totaling 600MW of generation capacity and supported by significant battery storage systems.

Through its Australian arm, Gamuda Holdings, the company is partnering with the Downie Family and energy consultancy Alternate Path to bring the 350MW Cellars Hill wind-plus-storage and 250MW Weasel solar-plus-storage projects to life.

Weasel Solar-Plus-Storage Project

Located 9km north of Bothwell in Tasmania’s Midlands region, the Weasel solar PV project will span 270 hectares and use single-axis tracking technology. It will be co-located with a 144MW/576MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on a 3-hectare site.

Notably, the project was fast-tracked through the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, receiving federal approval in just 20 days following its April 2025 submission. The project supports agrivoltaics, combining clean energy generation with sheep grazing.

Cellars Hill Wind-Plus-Storage Project

The AU$1.5 billion (US$940 million) Cellars Hill wind farm will deliver 350MW of wind generation and plans for a 600MW/2,400MWh BESS, making it one of the largest battery co-located wind projects proposed in the region.

Designated as a ‘Major Project’ by the Tasmanian government in February 2025, it reflects the state’s commitment to large-scale clean energy investment.

Gamuda’s Long-Term Energy Vision

Gamuda will hold equity stakes in both projects, securing development rights and executing them under sole-source EPC contracts. Construction is projected to begin in 2027 (Weasel) and 2028 (Cellars Hill), pending further approvals.
