DNV wins engineering role on Abydos solar project in Egypt
20 June 2025
Norway’s DNV has been appointed as the owner’s engineer for the 1GW Abydos for Renewable Energy (AFRE) solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Benban, Egypt, which includes a 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (bess).
DNV will oversee the project from its feasibility and design phases through to construction supervision and commissioning.
Developed by Amea Power, the project aims to provide 3,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy annually, enough to power over 500,000 homes and reduce carbon emissions by 1.5 million tons each year.
Earlier in June, Amea Power completed the financial close of the first-ever utility-scale bess project in Egypt.
The 300MWh bess project is an extension of Amea Power’s operational 500MW solar PV plant in Aswan Governorate, which was commissioned in December 2024.
The Abydos solar PV plant was completed in 18 months. It can generate approximately 1,500GWh of clean energy annually, enough to power approximately 300,000 households while offsetting 782,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
