Kent secures concept design study contract for offshore substation
11 October 2024
Global integrated energy services provider Kent has announced securing a new contract for the concept design study for an HVAC [heating, ventilation and air-conditioning] offshore substation platform for the Five Estuaries offshore wind farm, led by RWE.
The Five Estuaries offshore wind farm is the extension of the operational Galloper wind farm, which is valued at £1.5bn ($1.9bn) and has a capacity of 353MW.
Located 30km off the UK’s Suffolk coast, Galloper has been fully operational since March 2018, contributing significantly to the country’s green electricity supply.
Galloper Wind Farm’s 56 turbines generate enough electricity annually to power more than 444,000 UK homes.
The new proposed Five Estuaries project, 37km from the Suffolk/Essex coastline, aims to be operational by 2031.
Leading renewables developer RWE is at the forefront of the Five Estuaries project, overseeing its development, construction and operation.
The project is backed by multiple shareholders, with RWE taking the lead.
Kent’s role includes conducting the offshore substation topside concept design and assessing and conceptualising the support structure foundation.
The contract will enhance Kent’s position in the offshore wind sector while affirming its commitment to the UK’s renewable energy objectives.
It also supports the UK government’s aim to power every home with offshore wind by 2034.
Kent offshore wind head Cerianne Cummings stated: “We are extremely proud to be part of this journey with RWE and continue to support the continued growth of the offshore wind sector in the UK.
“Our team is committed to working collaboratively to ensure the success of the project, now and as it progresses.”
