The Swedish arm of German offshore wind company Skyborn Renewables has submitted an application to the Swedish government to build a giant wind farm off Sweden’s northeastern coast.

The 3GW farm will be in the shallow waters at the top of the Gulf of Bothnia, 35km south of the town of Kalix near the Finnish border.

The Polargrund Offshore farm is expected to generate 10TWh of green energy a year, equal to about 7% of Sweden’s current demand.

It may also be used to generate some 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year.

The scheme is intended to meet demand in the northern Norrbotten region, which is experiencing a boom in mining and other industries looking for cleaner energy sources.

Sweden’s electricity consumption is expected to double in the coming decades primarily owing to the electrification of heavy industries.

Skyborn said there could be an 800% surge in electricity demand in Norrbotten.

“As the developer behind Sweden’s northernmost offshore wind farm, we are prepared to tackle the challenges of constructing such a large-scale project in the arctic environment,” said Skyborn chief executive Niclas Broman.
