Fluor JV starts work on $700m Texas highway project

A joint venture between Fluor and Austin Bridge and Road has broken ground on the first phase of the Interstate 35 (I-35) Northeast Expansion South in San Antonio, Texas.
The team, known as the Lone Star Constructors, won the $700m contract from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in 2023.
It involves building three elevated lanes in each direction from the I-35/I-410 South interchange to the I-35/I-410 North interchange along I-35.
The project also includes a five-year capital maintenance period, with the option of two five-year extensions.
Shawn West, President of Fluor’s Infrastructure arm, said: “Phase 1 of the I-35 NEX South project builds on Fluor’s more than two decades of work helping TxDOT improve safety and vehicular mobility across the state.
“This project reinforces Fluor’s commitment to deliver quality infrastructure and supports economic development and commerce in Texas.”
The I-35 corridor currently accommodates 150,000 vehicles per day.
The project is due to be substantially completed in early 2028.
