CEEC Breaks Ground on First Photovoltaic Power Project in Tunisia
17 May 2024CEEC broke ground on a 100-megawatt PV power project in Tunisia's Kairouan Province on May 8, local time.
The power station is being constructed by a consortium comprising Northwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. of China Power Engineering Consulting Group and CEEC Tianjin Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd.
Situated in central Tunisia’s Kairouan Province, the project spans approximately 200 hectares. It is the first ground-mounted PV power station in the country as well as the country's largest photovoltaic power station currently in the works.
Once operational, the project is projected to generate around 5.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity over a 25-year period, resulting in a reduction of 5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to planting 12 million trees in the Sahara Desert.
As a crucial strategic project for renewable energy development in Tunisia, the power station will address the local electricity shortage and provide ample clean and renewable energy for local industrial, agricultural, and residential needs.
It will also contribute to the adjustment of Tunisia's energy structure and industrial transformation, promote local economic and social development, and safeguard the environment.
In recent years, CEEC has undertaken numerous large-scale PV projects overseas, including the 2.6 GW Photovoltaic Power Plant Project in Al Shuaibah, Saudi Arabia, the largest PV project in Central Asia and North Africa; the 1 GW PV project in Uzbekistan, the largest PV project invested by Chinese enterprises in Central Asia; the 200 MW Kom Ombo PV solar plant in Egypt, the largest single PV project in Egypt; and the 60 MW floating solar PV project at Tengeh Reservoir in Singapore, the world’s largest floating solar farm that was built in a drinking water reservoir.
These projects have provided substantial support for the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation by consistently supplying green energy.
