Japan’s tallest building, the Mori JP Tower, designed by American architect Pelli Clarke & Partners, has been completed in Tokyo.

The residential and office building contains 64 floors, the top 11 of which are owned by Swiss hospitality company Aman Resorts.

The design is intended to resemble a lotus flower, and the building is clad in pearl-gray glass topped by a crown made of four curved petals. The building will glow at night, and strands of light will run upwards from the street to encircle the crown.

The tower will be flanked by two mixed-use buildings also designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners. Residence A will be 53-storeys tall and contain 320 residential units and a 122-key luxury hotel. The 64-floor Residence B will have 970 residential units.

The projects are located in Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills district, an 8ha, $4.4bn development described by the Mori Building Company as a “modern urban village”. It has homes, shops, a school, two temples, art galleries, offices and restaurants.

Mitch Hirsch, a partner in Pelli Clarke, said: “The Mori JP Tower, and with it Azabudai Hills, is among the first buildings visitors see upon arrival to Tokyo, creating a new centre and landmark for the city. To design a tower of this significance in a city renowned for its unique skyline is a privilege.”
