A joint venture between Swiss contractor Implenia and Germany’s Johann Bunte Bauunternehmen will build a ring-road to alleviating traffic congestion in Bremen, northwest Germany.

The 1.7km bypass will be located between the Neuenlander Ring and the Kattenturmer Heerstrasse near Bremen Airport.

The work includes building a 400m elevated section on a prestressed concrete bridge, perparation work for an eventual tunnel under the Kattenturmer Heerstrasse and a 1km-long, four-lane motorway section.

Implenia’s share of the €130m contract is estimated to be worth €100m. It was awarded by DEGES, Germany’s state-owned project management organisation.

Henning Schrewe, Implenia Germany’s head of civil and special foundations, said: “We are extremely pleased that DEGES has once again chosen us because of our integrated service offering for complex infrastructure projects.

“Thanks to our experts in civil engineering and special foundations, we can deliver these services as an integrated unit and successfully execute this major project.”

Construction on the project is due to begin in May and should be completed in 2029.

The project is part of Implenia’s strategy of focusing on large, complex infrastructure projects.
