Google signs 715MW clean energy supply agreements in Europe
4 February 2024
Tech giant Google has finalised four corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) to secure 715MW of clean energy to power its European data centres and offices.
The agreements are part of Google’s strategy to power its operations with carbon-free energy by 2030.
The company has signed agreements for the supply of 478MW of clean energy from two new offshore wind farms, HKN V and HKW VI – its largest offshore wind PPA so far.
To be located off the Dutch coast, the subsidy-free offshore wind projects are under development by Crosswind and Ecowende, JVs between Shell and Dutch utility Eneco.
HKN V and HKW VI will generate 6% of the Netherlands’ annual electricity needs.
In Italy, Google has entered into its inaugural long-term PPA for 47MW of clean energy from an onshore wind project managed by ERG.
The agreement will enhance the carbon-free energy supply for the tech giant’s Italian offices, including those in Milan and Turin.
Google signed the third agreement for 106MW of solar power in Poland with GoldenPeaks Capital.
It also secured two new green energy deals in Belgium totalling 84MW.
These agreements will facilitate the development of 11 new onshore wind farms by Aspiravi and Luminus.
They will supply 85% carbon-free electricity for Google’s offices and data centres from 2024.
Google Europe, Middle East and Africa president Matt Brittin stated: “At a time when the world relies more and more on digital services, cloud computing and AI [artificial intelligence] technologies, it is more important than ever to provide access to technology efficiently and sustainably.
“That is why we continue to invest in solutions that can accelerate the decarbonisation of electricity grids and reduce the stress on local grids by shifting work to other times and places, while maintaining the speed, safety and responsiveness you expect from Google.”
