BHEL wins EPC contract for 2.4GW power project in Odisha, India
20 January 2024
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from NLC India to construct a 2.4GW thermal power plant in the Indian state of Odisha.
The project, won through international competitive bidding, will be a greenfield installation with three units of 800MW each.
The contract encompasses the engineering, procurement and construction of the plant in the Jharsuguda district.
BHEL will supply boilers, turbines, generators and auxiliary systems. The boilers will have biomass co-firing capabilities.
The plant will also feature pollution control equipment to control sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emissions to meet environmental guidelines.
The project is set to be completed within the 64 months up to mid-2029.
The major equipment will be manufactured at BHEL’s plants in Bengaluru, Bhopal, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Ranipet, Rudrapur, Trichy and Varanasi.
Its southern region power division will be responsible for the civil works and installation and equipment commissioning.
BHEL has a long-standing relationship with NLC India, having installed 77% of its 3.6GW coal and lignite power capacity.
These installations include multiple units with capacities ranging from 125MW to 500MW.
In July 2023, BHEL achieved a milestone by synchronising the second unit of the Maitree superthermal power project in Bangladesh.
Located in Rampal in the Bagerhat district, the two-unit 660MW Maitree project STPP is being developed by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company, a 50:50 joint venture between the Bangladesh Power Development Board and NTPC, India’s state-owned electric utility company.
