Korean team signs agreement to rebuild Ukraine’s railways

Two Korean companies have signed a memorandum of understanding with Ukraine’s rail operator to aid the rebuilding of railways in the war torn country.

According to The Korea Times, Korea’s state railway and railroad corporation agreed to aid the building of seven projects, including a route connecting Ukraine and Poland, an expansion of the railways through the centres of Izmail, Odesa and Reni, and the building of a rail traffic control centre.

Korea National Railway will work on feasibility studies and Korea Railroad Corporation will focus on operation and maintenance. Hyundai Rotem will build the trains and a maintenance facility.

There is currently no timeframe for the construction, and no financial details have been disclosed.

Korean state agencies and Hyundai recently signed deals to modernise Ukraine’s Boryspil Airport.
