TotalEnergies and Veolia inaugurates Oman’s Solar Project
8 November 2023
TotalEnergies and Veolia, through Sharqiyah Desalination Company SAOG, marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of a pioneering 17 MWp ground-mounted solar project in Sur, Oman.
This remarkable project is set to revolutionize the region’s approach to sustainable energy.
This state-of-the-art solar installation will annually produce over 30,000 MWh of green electricity. This green energy will cover over 30% of the desalination plant’s daily power consumption and reduce CO2 emissions by a whopping 210,000 tons over the contract duration.
What makes this project even more special is that it’s the first of its kind in Oman and one of the largest solar photovoltaic systems to power a desalination plant in the country. This initiative aligns perfectly with Oman’s National Energy Strategy, which aims to transition 30% of its electricity to renewable sources by 2030.
This solar project features over 32,000 high-efficiency solar panels and an innovative East-West tracker system, maximizing energy production. It spans over a massive 130,000 square meters, equivalent to about 18 football fields.
This venture is a testament to TotalEnergies’ renewable energy ambition, aiming to reach 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewables and storage by 2025, and a remarkable 100 GW by 2030, statement mentioned.
