A consortium made up of Portugal’s Alberto Couto Alves and two Spanish contractors, FCC Construcción and Contratas y Ventas, has landed a €380m tender to build the 6.4km Ruby line for the Porto metro.

The route will have eight stations and cross the Douro River at the Antónia Adelaide Ferreira Bridge, a new structure dedicated to public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

A second consortium, comprising Casais Group and Engenharia e Construção also bid for the contract.

Work on the project is due to begin by the end of 2023.

The metro for Portugal’s second city was begun in 1993 and the first line opened in 2002. The network presently has six lines covering 67km and serving 82 stations.
