Granite wins contracts in Ohio and Utah worth $288m
2 September 2023
Californian contractor Granite has won a $215m tunnelling contract in Ohio and a $73m water project in Utah.
In Akron, Ohio, Granite will build the 16.5ft-diameter Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) to reduce sewer overflows into the Cuyahoga River during storms.
The 6,660-foot-long tunnel will be able to hold up to 10 million gallons.
Granite described it as a “precast-concrete-segmental-lined rock tunnel”, to be located 100ft underground. Other features include control structures, flow drop shafts, connecting sewers and overflow structures.
The project is due to be completed in 2027.
Granite has also won a $73m contract to fortify and modernise the Deer Creek Dam & Reservoir in Heber Valley, Utah.
Granite will add a bypass intake onto the existing infrastructure, allowing the Provo River Water Users Association to shut down the water intake and rehabilitate the existing guard gates for the first time in 80 years, when the project originally opened.
Work began in May 2023 and is due to be completed in March of 2026.
