Vestas wins 140MW turbine contract for Canada’s Halkirk II project
18 August 2023
Denmark-based wind turbine maker Vestas has secured an order from Capital Power to supply turbines for its 140MW Halkirk II wind project in Paintearth County in Alberta, Canada.
Vestas will supply 31 V150-4.5 MW wind turbines.
The contract covers the delivery and commissioning of the turbines, and also includes a ten-year Active Output Management 5000 service agreement.
Vestas North America president Laura Beane stated: “We are thrilled to partner again with Capital Power to expand their wind energy portfolios in Canada, particularly with one of the industry’s highest-producing onshore wind turbines.
“The 4MW platform is ideally suited for Alberta’s wind environment and our strong service operations will ensure Capital Power’s projects operate at full capacity.”
Delivery of the wind turbines will begin in the second quarter of 2024 and commissioning will take place in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Capital Power construction and engineering senior vice-president Steve Owens stated: “We are excited to once again partner with Vestas for the supply of wind turbine technology for our Halkirk II Wind project, another critical facet of our balanced approach to net zero by 2045.
“The V150-4.5 MW wind turbines will bring our Halkirk II Wind project to life as we continue to power a sustainable future for people and planet.”
The wind farm is an extension of the existing Halkirk I wind farm and will be located on 17,000 acres of land.
To be completed in early 2025, Halkirk II will generate enough clean electricity to power 63,000 homes.
The Alberta Utilities Commission approved the project in July 2023.
Capital Power reached a 23-year clean electricity supply agreement with Public Services and Procurement Canada in February 2023 to supply 250,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually from the wind farm.
