13 April 2023
The government of Germany is planning to spend €2.1bn on renovations to its Berlin estate, broadcaster Deutsche Welle reports.
The aim is to create additional space in the Chancellery, the Finance Ministry, the Environment Ministry, and the Bundestag visitor centre.
Among the projects being planned is a €777m arch-shaped addition to the Chancellery, which will be able to accommodate 400 offices, a kindergarten, and a helipad. The Environment Ministry is in line for a €240m extension and the visitor centre will get a €200m renovation.
There will also be a €200m ministerial building in central Berlin, costing €200 million.
Another 12 buildings are set to be built for government employees in Bonn, the former capital of West Germany, which still houses some elements of the federal government.
