Flatiron wins $341m in work on California water and broadband
28 March 2023
Hochtief subsidiary Flatiron has won water and broadband contracts in California worth a combined $341m.
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) picked the contractor to deliver water treatment projects in the Oakland area.
This $237m contract sees the company upgrading the Upper San Leandro and Sobrante water treatment plants.
Built in 1927, the Upper San Leandro plant supplies the Oakland, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Piedmont, Hayward and Castro Valley communities.
Among other things, Flatiron will rehabilitate tanks, pumps, pipelines, and treatment systems.
It is already under contract with EBMUD for the $31m Maloney Pumping Plant project, awarded in 2019, and the $267m Orinda Water Treatment Plant project, awarded in 2022.
Separately, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has given a Flatiron-led joint venture (with Ledcor) a three-year, $104m contract to install broadband infrastructure for underserved communities in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
The 208-mile project route has challenging, rocky-soil conditions, Flatiron said.
Most of it lies in the jurisdiction of the California Coastal Commission, with areas requiring biological and aquatic mitigation.
The route also crosses historic bridges, railroad lines, canals, and overpasses.
