New York State Governor Kathy Hochul presided over the groundbreaking for the $4.2bn project to develop a new Terminal 6 at JFK International Airport on 23 February.

The 1.2 million-sq-ft building on the airport’s north side will have 10 new gates, nine of them wide-bodied.

The project will create some 1,800 construction jobs, the governor’s office said.

It’s the final piece of the JFK Vision Plan.

Terminal 6 is a public-private partnership between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and “JFK Millennium Partners”, a consortium that includes Vantage Airport Group, American Triple I, New York real estate operating company RXR, and JetBlue Airways.

The consortium will build the new terminal in two phases, with the first new gates opening in 2026 and construction completion in 2028.

It spans the sites of the former Terminal 6 and the existing Terminal 7, which will be torn down to make way for the second phase of construction.

Aecom Hunt is serving as construction manager for the project.
