Skanska to oversee construction of massive New York wind farms
10 February 2023
Swedish contractor Skanska has won a construction management deal for two offshore wind farms in New York that will together generate up to 3.3GW of power, enough to supply 2 million homes.
Located off the coast of Long Island, Empire Wind and Beacon Wind are being developed by BP in partnership with offshore energy company Equinor Renewables.
Work on the project includes upgrading South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), which will receive and store energy and serve as the farms’ operations and maintenance base.
Molly Morris, Equinor Wind’s US president, said: “SBMT will play an integral role in powering New York homes with offshore wind energy while restoring the working waterfront of Sunset Park and creating renewable energy career opportunities.
“We will collaborate in seeking to lower emissions from construction and bringing communities as well as minority and women owned-business enterprises into the supply chain.”
New York’s first commercial-scale wind turbine was installed at the Sims Municipal Recycling facility (pictured) at SBMT in 2015.
Skanska’s initial scope of work involves providing pre-construction services. Work is expected to begin next year.
