Canadian design engineer Stantec has been selected as programme management consultant for a US$7.6bn wastewater treatment plant in Vancouver.

Billed as the largest capital programme ever undertaken by the Metro Vancouver federation of 23 municipalities, the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant will add a tertiary treatment facility and a range of ecological restoration works.

It will also recover thermal energy from the wastewater.

Stantec’s multidisciplinary team will work alongside Metro Vancouver staff to oversee the work.

Ryan Roberts, Stantec’s North American Water Business Leader, commented in a press statement: “This programme will be a shining example for large water infrastructure programs for communities around the world.”

The company added that the plant would be designed with consideration of First Nations and community stakeholders.

Completion of the full programme is scheduled for 2038 with tertiary treatment commissioning in 2035.

Edmonton-based Stantec has worked on similar projects, including the Capital Regional District wastewater programme in Victoria, British Columbia, the Pure Water Programme in San Diego, and the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility Capital Improvement Plan.
