Moscow’s new road, bridge and tunnel links planned
26 February 2022
New road, bridge and tunnel links are planned for Moscow in a bid to help reduce the city’s chronic traffic congestion. The plans call for 91km of new roads to be built in 2022, as well as 19 overpasses, bridges and tunnels. New pedestrian crossings will also be installed in key areas.
The new 68km Moscow High-Speed Diameter (MSD) highway will be delivered by joining the North-Eastern and South-Eastern chords. Construction of the North-Eastern Chord, the first stage of the MSD project, will be carried out in 2022. During 2023, construction work will be carried out on the South-Eastern Chord, which will form the second stage of the MSD project.
New interchanges will be constructed to link with the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD), Ostashkovskoe Highway and Altufyevskoe Highway.
On the South Eastern outskirts of Moscow, a new bridge will be built to span the Pekhorka River that will feature three lanes in either direction. Design work is underway and the project will also include new road alignment construction, with completion due in 2024.
