Pakistan plans major programme of road development

A major programme of road development is planned by Pakistan to expand and improve its transport network. Funding has been secured from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), with additional funding also possible from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The ADB has agreed to supply a US$407 million loan while a further $321 million loan could come from the AIIB, totalling $728 million. In all the work is expected to cost $817 million, with a priority being the upgrading of 535km of existing roads in the Southern Punjab to dual carriageway status.

Road maintenance work will be carried out as well as safety improvements and better drainage facilities.

The Pakistan Government also intends to establish a body that will manage the Punjab’s provincial highways.
