Moulay Bousselham wastewater treatment plant contract for construction awarded
14 August 2021Régie Autonome de Kenitra (RAK), a public body in charge of water distribution, electricity, and sewage management in Morocco, has awarded the contract for the design and construction of the proposed Moulay Bousselham wastewater treatment plant in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region.
The contract was awarded to Biwater Holdings Limited, a British company dedicated to the development of products and services that support the needs of the water industry in the world, thanks to its extensive experience (a 53-year track record) in the design and implementation of drinking water and waste systems.
This project, according to Biwater, is part of the Moroccan authorities’ strategy to increase investment in sanitation solutions tenfold, a priority as “the North African kingdom strives to meet the demands of developing industry, commerce, agriculture, and tourism.
Upon completion, the Moulay Bousselham wastewater treatment plant is planned to provide pretreatment, biological treatment, and advanced tertiary treatment of wastewater, including closed-circuit low-pressure ultraviolet disinfection.
According to Yassine Laib, the national director of Biwater for Morocco, the objective of this project is to protect the Merje Zerga lagoon reserve, (one of the most important bird habitats in Morocco, attracting birdwatchers from all over the world) and the beach of Moulay Bousselham from the discharge of wastewater, which can cause biological disturbances, resulting in disorders in reproduction, growth or the immune system of aquatic organisms.
The treated wastewater will be used for irrigation in the region, which is well known for its agricultural activities, particularly the production of strawberries that are exported all over the world.
