Egypt awards contract for construction of Maghagha wastewater treatment plant
5 August 2021The Egyptian Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, has appointed and awarded Hassan Allam Construction, a subsidiary of the Egyptian group Hassan Allam Holding, the contract for the construction of the Maghagha wastewater treatment plant.
According to the contract, Hassan Allam will carry out the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the plant with a capacity of 30k cubic meters per day in Maghagha, Minya, on the left bank of the Nile River.
The project has an expandable capacity of up to 60k cbm/d.
The aim of the Maghagha wastewater treatment plant project is to improve the collection and treatment of wastewater in the project host governorate. The wastewater will be collected through sewerage networks in five villages around the Maghagha, the northernmost city in the Minya Governorate.
Reportedly, the Egyptian government is implementing this project as a part of its strategy to provide rural areas with the necessary infrastructure to improve access to sanitation.
Noteworthy, the rate of access to sanitation in rural areas in the North African country is 66%. This level was reached less than a year ago thanks to an Egyptian government initiative that connected 85,000 rural households in approximately 106 villages to sanitation networks.
This initiative, through which the Egyptian government lowered connection tariffs and allowed newly connected families to pay the subscription fee in installments, was implemented in Beni Suef, Menoufeya, Minya, Giza, Qalyoubeya, Alexandria, Luxor, Qena, Fayoum, Sohag, Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, Beheira, Cairo, Suez, Ismailiyah, Sharqeya and Asyut governorates.
It required a total investment of US$ 19.4 million.
