US tech company Amazon has announced plans to spend $300m to build 3,000 homes in Tennessee, Washington, DC and Washington State.

The $300m budget will be split three ways:

  $125m will be used to create 1,000 homes in the Washington, DC area, working alongside the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority

  $100m will go on 1,200 homes in Washington State’s Puget Sound region

  $75m will be spent on 800 homes on private land in Nashville, Tennessee, near high-capacity transit corridors.

The $300m is part of Amazon’s $2bn Housing Equity Fund launched in January 2021 to create 20,000 affordable homes.

Jay Carney, Amazon’s senior vice president of global corporate affairs, said: “By investing $300m of Amazon’s $2bn Housing Equity Fund in transit-oriented housing development, moderate-to-low-income families in Puget Sound, Arlington and Nashville will be able to reduce their expenditures on housing while gaining easy transit to jobs and amenities. We hope this will pave a path for more inclusive communities.”

The homes are due to be ready by 2025 at the earliest.
