Expressions of interest invited for Abu Dhabi’s Mirfa 2 water project

Emirates Water and Electricity Company asks developers to submit proposals for independent water project to produce 150 MIGD reverse-osmosis facility

Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) has invited developers to submit expressions of interest for its planned Mirfa 2 (M2) independent water project, a reverse osmosis facility planned with the capacity to supply up to 150 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) of desalinated water.

According to reports on online news outlet Energy-Utilities, developers have been invited to submit their expressions of interest by March 4 for the desalination project. The reports also quoted sources close to the project as saying that Ewec has appointed an advisory team of Alderbook, White & Case and Fichtner as financial, legal and technical advisers respectively.

The M2 independent water project will be developed next to the existing Mirfa independent water and power project. Ewec has set a target of the first quarter of 2024 for the project’s commercial operations to begin.

In 2019, Ewec awarded the contract for the 200 MIGD Taweelah independent water project, which will be the world’s largest reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant. Acwa Power was appointed as the main developer for the project. The developer appointed China’s Sepco 3 and Spain’s Abengoa to carry out the EPC works for the plant.

The Abu Dhabi government holds a 60% stake in the Taweelah project.
