COMSA contributes to the electrification and modernisation of the Algarve Line in Portugal

The consortium comprising COMSA, COMSA Industrial and Fergrupo has carried out the electrification of the 45-kilometre Tunes–Lagos section, thereby completing the electrification of the Algarve Line between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António.

The Algarve Line now operates entirely on electric traction between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António, marking the culmination of a major modernisation programme for the railway network in southern Portugal.

As part of this project, the consortium comprising COMSA, COMSA Industrial and Fergrupo has carried out the electrification of the 45-kilometre Tunes–Lagos section, including the installation of the electric traction system and various works aimed at improving the railway infrastructure and safety.

The commissioning of the fully electrified line has enabled electric trains to run and the introduction of new direct connections between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António, eliminating the need to change trains in Faro.

To mark the completion of the project, a train journey was recently undertaken between Lagos and Tunes, attended by Portugal’s Secretary of State for Mobility, Cristina Pinto Dias, and the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Hugo Espírito Santo, alongside representatives from CP – Comboios de Portugal and Infraestruturas de Portugal.

The project helps to improve rail transport in the Algarve and move towards a more modern, efficient and sustainable network.

Through this project, COMSA is building on its expertise in carrying out rail electrification and modernisation projects, both in Spain and internationally.
