PCL Completes Amtrak's Seattle Maintenance & Inspection Facility at King Street Coach Yard
29 October 2026
SEATTLE (October 28, 2026) – PCL Construction Services, Inc. has completed Amtrak's new Seattle Maintenance & Inspection (M&I) Facility at the King Street Coach Yard, a major infrastructure project that will support fleet modernization and the continued growth of passenger rail service throughout the Northwest. The facility will serve Amtrak's expanding fleet, including the new Airo trainsets operating along Amtrak’s Cascades corridor across the Pacific Northwest, while improving maintenance capabilities, operational efficiency, and long-term service reliability.
The project includes a 90,000-square-foot maintenance and inspection facility, adjacent service and cleaning tracks, rail yard improvements, and a 39,000-square-foot parking structure. A standout feature of the facility is one of the nation's first shallow drop table systems for passenger rail service, allowing maintenance crews to remove and replace wheelsets and other undercarriage components without the extensive excavation required by traditional systems. By bringing inspection, servicing and maintenance activities together in a single location, the facility will help improve efficiency and support future passenger rail service throughout the region.
Constructing the facility required extensive coordination within an active rail yard in the heart of Seattle, allowing ongoing rail operations to continue while major infrastructure improvements were delivered. The work demanded careful planning, stakeholder coordination and a construction approach tailored to the challenges of a constrained urban site and live operating environment.
"This milestone reflects a partnership with Amtrak that we've built over many years and multiple projects throughout the Pacific Northwest," said Andrew Fernandez, district manager for PCL's Seattle office. "Constructing a facility of this complexity within an active railyard and dense urban environment required careful planning and coordination, with a focus on safely delivering the work while maintaining ongoing rail operations. We're proud to help deliver infrastructure that will support passenger rail service in the region for decades to come."
The Seattle M&I Facility represents the latest chapter in PCL's longstanding relationship with Amtrak, building on more than a decade of rail infrastructure work across the Northwest. The successful completion of the project demonstrates PCL's ability to deliver complex transportation infrastructure in active operating environments while maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety, quality and collaboration.
