Wärtsilä to supply 412MW of engine power for US data centre
20 April 2026
Wärtsilä has secured a contract to supply 412MW of engine power for a new hyperscale data centre project in Ohio, US.
The project will feature the deployment of 40 Wärtsilä 34SG spark gas engines.
According to Wärtsilä, this is the first instance of the 34SG model being used in a data centre context.
With this latest contract, the company’s total engine capacity sold into the US data centre market surpasses 1.6GW.
Wärtsilä booked the order in the second quarter of 2026 (Q2 2026).
The new Ohio power plant will be capable of providing flexible, primary power to the data centre, supporting operations without reliance on the local power grid.
This approach aims to address the lengthy grid interconnection wait times that are often faced in the US.
The company plans to deliver the equipment in line with expectations for the data centre to begin commercial operations in early 2028.
This project marks the fourth order Wärtsilä has received for data centre power solutions in the US.
The modular configuration of the 34SG engines enables data centre developers to add capacity in discrete blocks, with the potential for scaling to more than 500MW.
Globally, Wärtsilä Energy reports a track record of supplying 81GW of power plant capacity and more than 130 energy storage systems in 180 countries.
Wärtsilä Energy Americas vice-president Risto Paldanius said: “As AI and cloud demand accelerate, operators need energy solutions that are efficient, resilient and available on their timeline – not the grid’s. Wärtsilä provides that foundation, delivering dependable, high-performance power that scales as quickly as their infrastructure.
“The customer chose Wärtsilä for its proven reliability, rapid deployment and strong operational efficiency across diverse operating conditions.”
In January, Wärtsilä received an order to deliver 429MW of engine power to a US power plant to address growing data centre demand.
The facility, operated by an investor-owned utility, will be equipped with 24 Wärtsilä 50SG engines under a contract recorded in Q1 2026.
