The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), together with Salalah Free Zone, signed a usufruct agreement covering the establishment of an advanced electric battery chemicals project by GFCL Electric Power, part of the global Anox GFCL Group. The agreement was signed by Eng Ahmed bin Hassan al Dheeb, Vice Chairman of the Public Authority, Dr Ali bin Mohammed Tabuk, CEO of Salalah Free Zone and B C Jin, CEO of GFCL Electric Power.

The project, with a total investment exceeding RO 188 million, will be implemented in phases over 4 to 6 years, with around RO 73 million to be invested in the first phase. Covering approximately 370,000 square metres, the facility will produce lithium iron phosphate, ammonium phosphate, iron salts and carbon materials used in batteries for electric vehicles, energy storage and modern electronic technologies. The project is expected to support production of up to 100 GWh of batteries in phases, serving the EV sector and energy storage solutions.

Dr Ali Tabuk highlighted that the agreement reflects strong coordination with Invest in Oman and the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, demonstrating growing confidence in Oman’s investment environment. He described the project as a strategic addition to Salalah Free Zone, emphasising its role in promoting green industries, attracting high-quality projects and positioning Oman as a regional hub for advanced battery manufacturing.

The project aims to establish a local lithium battery materials base, create direct and indirect employment, develop Omani youth skills and provide extensive investment opportunities in battery system components. The Public Authority has linked essential service incentives to ensure sustainable local value, promote industrial innovation and empower Omani talent.

GFCL Electric Power also plans to support community development through strategic SME partnerships via a corporate social responsibility programme aimed at tangible local impact and business growth.
